Salurn waterfall

Salurn Waterfall (Cascata Salorno; German: Titschenbach Wasserfall) in Pochi-Buchholz is a 68-metre single-drop waterfall on the Titschenbach stream (Italian: Rio Tigia), in the municipality of Salurn/Salorno on the South Tyrolean Wine Road. The waterfall is inseparable from the history of the town – Salurn grew up as a settlement precisely because of this water.

A waterfall that named a village

The Titschenbach has supplied water to the area since prehistoric times, channelled into canals for everyday use by the earliest inhabitants. The site appears in written records as early as 1288, when it was called "Tütsche" in a Tyrolean Urbar (land register). The name likely derives from the Latin "ductia," meaning a water pipe or channel – the same root that contributed to the town's name: Salurn as the "village on the Tütsche." Until the late 15th century the stream ran through the southern Gries district before being redirected to the northern mountainside. The wooden bridge over it was first built around 1500.

Getting there and what to see

The waterfall stands on Wasserfallweg/Via della Cascata. From the centre of Salurn, walk along Via Valfredda and turn onto the path that leads toward the rock face. Cross the bridge over the Titschenbach and follow the path to a viewpoint at the base of the 68-metre drop. The medieval Haderburg castle (Castello di Salorno) is visible to the right. The waterfall is also visible from the SS12 main road before entering the village. It is at its most powerful in spring and after heavy rainfall.
