Sardagna waterfall

Sardagna waterfall (Cascata di Sardagna) in Trento is one of the most visible yet little-discussed waterfalls in Trentino. From a height of approximately 174 metres, water descends the western cliff face of the hill directly above the city centre, forming a white ribbon clearly visible from the A22 motorway and from the western parts of Trento.

Where does the water come from?

The waterfall originates in Sardagna — a small village at the top of the hill above Trento. A fast-flowing stream runs through the village and, on reaching the edge of the rocky escarpment, drops down toward the San Nicolò district below, eventually draining into the Adige River. The falls are most impressive in spring, when heavy winter precipitation swells the stream to its maximum; in summer the flow diminishes noticeably.

How to see the waterfall

The most convenient approach is the Funivia Trento-Sardagna cable car, which connects central Trento directly to Sardagna village at the top of the hill. From the upper station, it is possible to walk around the village and observe the stream that feeds the cascade from above, then on the return journey admire the full drop from the cable car. From below — whether from the motorway or the western road into Trento — the entire height of the waterfall is visible against the cliff face. A historic church stands on the escarpment above the falls and serves as a useful landmark.
