Cascata del Mughetto

Cascata del Mughetto is a secluded and scenic waterfall in the municipality of Trento, tucked beneath the hamlet of Masi Saracini on the slopes of the Argentario plateau. It is less than half an hour on foot from the centre of Meano, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Trento. The falls are formed by the Rio di Carpine, a stream of just three kilometres that rises near Montavaccino di Sopra and joins the Adige Valley north of Gardolo.

What the waterfall looks like

The Rio di Carpine has spent centuries carving through the soft sedimentary rock of the hillside, creating small gorge walls with visibly layered strata. The waterfall itself drops several metres, after which the stream weaves between boulders broken away from the rock face above by the water's own erosive force. Clear, still pools alternate with foaming cascades and smaller drops, making this one of the most picturesque spots in the hills around Trento.

When to visit

The Rio di Carpine is a torrential stream whose flow varies considerably by season. The waterfall is at its best in spring and autumn, when rainfall is heaviest and the water volume is highest. In winter the flow drops to its lowest.

Nature along the waterfall

The stream's name likely comes from the black hornbeam (carpino nero; in local dialect, càrpen), the most common tree along its banks. Oak, maple, flowering ash, hazel, Scots pine, and black pine also grow in the surrounding woodland. Near the water, shade and moisture encourage dense ferns and ivy. The stream is clean enough to support brown trout and even the rare freshwater crayfish; fire salamanders deposit their larvae in the calmer pools.
