Cascata della Brentana in Scurelle is a waterfall in Trentino, set in the Val Campelle valley along the road to Rifugio Crucolo. The cascade runs beside Str. dei Sassi Rossi and is visible directly from the road – visitors can view it from a small wooden bridge or pull over at a nearby roadside parking spot.

When to visit

The waterfall is at its most powerful in spring and after heavy rain, when snowmelt and runoff from the slopes above swell the stream. Flow decreases during summer, though the cascade remains visible throughout the year.

Val Campelle

Cascata della Brentana sits at the entrance to Val Campelle, one of the main access valleys into the Lagorai mountain group east of Trento. The Maso di Spinelle torrent flows through the valley, fed by the clear water of more than 30 high-altitude alpine lakes. In summer, cattle graze at the alpine dairy farms, producing mountain cheese by traditional methods. The valley is home to chamois, deer, roe deer and marmots, with slopes covered in wild gentian and rhododendron.

Val Campelle also carries traces of the First World War – the front line once ran through these mountains, and remnants of trenches, field hospitals and a military cemetery are still visible along the hiking paths today.

Getting there

From the SS47 Valsugana road, turn off at Strigno-Scurelle and follow signs toward Spera, then continue on the road to Rifugio Crucolo along the Maso torrent. The waterfall is visible from this road before reaching the rifugio. Several picnic areas with tables and barbecue spots line the route beside the stream.

Rifugio Crucolo

About a kilometre from the waterfall stands Rifugio Crucolo, a historic mountain inn with a restaurant that has been run by the same family – the Purins – since 1782. The eighth generation of the family manages it today.
