Póvoa de Varzim City Park

Póvoa de Varzim, Beiriz e Argivai, Portugal

About this place

Póvoa de Varzim City Park (Parque da Cidade da Póvoa de Varzim) is a public urban park in the northern Portuguese city of Póvoa de Varzim, not far from Porto. It opened on 30 June 2009. It is the city's green heart, where locals jog, stroll and unwind, and where visitors can spend a few quiet hours away from the seaside bustle.

Who designed the park?

The park was designed by Professor Sidónio Pardal, a landscape architect who also designed Porto's Parque da Cidade. If you know that park, you will recognise a similar approach here: wide open green areas, gentle hills and paths laid out to suit both athletes and people simply looking for a calm spot.

How big is it and what is inside?

The park is being built in phases. It currently covers around 30 hectares and, once complete, is planned to reach 78 hectares, stretching from the A28 motorway to the site of the former Clipóvoa factory. The second phase, opened in 2009, added roughly 19 hectares of green space, a lake, rest areas and three kilometres of walking paths.

The landscape combines hills, a restored stream that supports local wildlife, and modest architecture: small bridges, squares and rustic buildings. The mood is calm and almost rural, even though you are inside the city.

What is there to see by the lake?

The main attraction is the lake, about two hectares in size. In the middle lies an island roughly 130 metres long and 20 metres wide, closed to visitors, which leaves it as a quiet refuge for birds. Rocks rise out of the water and add to the scenery. The paths around the lake make a good short walk and a good place for photos.

Is it good for sport and recreation?

Yes. The park has equipment that encourages exercise, and its three kilometres of paths suit jogging, walking and cycling. The Estádio Municipal da Póvoa de Varzim, the city's municipal stadium, is next door. Families will appreciate the squares and rest areas where you can sit with children.

Is it a place for birdwatching?

The park is listed on Portuguese birdwatching sites. The recovered stream, the lake and the greenery attract birds, so bring binoculars and come in the morning when it is quiet.

How to plan your visit

The park is open to everyone and sits within the city, so it is easy to combine with a tour of Póvoa de Varzim, known for its beaches and Atlantic promenade. Allow one to two hours for an unhurried walk around the lake. Wear comfortable shoes and, if you like, bring food for a picnic. Because the park is still expanding, parts of the layout may change, so check the municipality's website before you go.
