About this place
Quinta da Conceição is a municipal park in Leça da Palmeira, in the municipality of Matosinhos near Porto. It sits on the right bank of the Leça River, close to the Port of Leixões and the Exponor exhibition centre. Shaded paths, lawns and the remains of a former convent bring together centuries of history and mid-century Portuguese architecture.
How did the place come about?
In 1481 Franciscan friars settled here and founded the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. When religious orders were dissolved in nineteenth-century Portugal, the friars left and the estate was sold at public auction. For a long time afterwards it had no single, settled purpose.
In 1956 the tourism commission of the Matosinhos town council leased the remaining property to create the "Parque da Vila", a public park. The architect Fernando Távora led the project and, between 1956 and 1961, shaped the layout while deliberately responding to what survived of the convent.
What is there to see?
- The former convent cloister, still legible within the park.
- Fountains left from the earlier complex.
- A Manueline-style portal, a reminder of late Gothic Portuguese architecture from the Age of Discoveries.
- The chapel of St Francis, recalling the Franciscan past.
- A tennis pavilion by Távora, dating from the 1960s.
- The Quinta da Conceição swimming pool, a modernist work by Álvaro Siza Vieira, a Pritzker Prize laureate.
Why is Siza's pool so well known?
The pool was built in the 1960s as part of the park improvements coordinated by Fernando Távora. It is one of Siza's early works in Matosinhos and regularly features on architecture routes around Porto. It also illustrates an approach that joins a modern form with an existing landscape and historic fabric.
Who is it for?
The park makes a calm stop while exploring Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira. Architecture enthusiasts will find convent remains alongside the work of two leading Portuguese architects, Távora and Siza. For anyone simply after a break, it is a green space with shade and lawns, a few minutes from the port and the coast.
