About this place
Parque da Cidade do Porto is the largest urban park in Portugal. It covers roughly 83 hectares and runs from the central part of Porto, off Avenida da Boavista, all the way to the Atlantic coast at Matosinhos. It is a good place to slow down after the narrow streets of the old town, whether you want to jog, stroll or simply sit by the water.
Where is Parque da Cidade and how is it laid out?
The park sits in the western part of Porto, at around 41.169 N, 8.678 W. The landscape leads visitors gradually toward the sea: it begins among city buildings and ends at the ocean. About 10 kilometres of paths cross the grounds, so you can plan a short walk or a longer running route.
Who designed it and when did it open?
The park opened in 1993 and was designed by landscape architect Sidónio Pardal, who has created several parks across Portugal. At the time of its opening it was smaller than it is today. Over the years it kept growing, and the expansion was completed in 2002 with the construction of the seafront section, which tied the greenery to the ocean.
What can you see here?
- Varied vegetation. Many species of trees grow in the park, with lawns and paths between them.
- Lakes. Ponds are scattered across the grounds, with birds living around them, and rabbits can be spotted too.
- Pavilhão de Água. The distinctive Water Pavilion was designed by architect Alexandre Burmeister and was shown at Expo 98 in Lisbon.
- Sea Life. A Sea Life centre operates near the park, a handy stop for families with children.
Is there anything else worth seeing nearby?
Yes. At the end of the park, above the beach, stands Castelo do Queijo, officially the Forte de São Francisco Xavier. This historic fortress sits on rocks by the ocean and offers views over the Atlantic. Together, the park, fort and beach can fill half a day without needing a car.
