About this place
Jardim do Passeio Alegre is a 19th-century garden in the Foz do Douro district of Porto, right where the Douro River meets the Atlantic. Since its creation it has been a favourite place for strolls and social life, and today it remains one of the most atmospheric green corners of the city's seaside side.
How did the garden come about?
German landscape architect Emile David designed it in 1860 as part of a wider effort to beautify Porto's waterfront areas. The first trees were planted in 1870, so many specimens are now over 150 years old and form shady, leafy avenues.
What is there to see?
Old, elegant buildings flank the garden, and its paths are dotted with slender palms, sculptures and fountains. Highlights include:
- a granite fountain that came from the former Convent of São Francisco,
- two obelisks marking one of the entrances, originally from Quinta da Prelada,
- a romantic chalet built in 1874, now a café-bar,
- a mini golf course, handy if you are visiting with children,
- a gazebo used for events,
- a bandstand that occasionally hosts concerts in summer.
How do you get there?
The garden sits beside the mouth of the Douro in Foz do Douro. A historic tram runs from Porto's old centre along the riverbank to the garden area. The ride is an attraction in itself and pairs nicely with a walk along the seafront.
When is the best time to visit?
Summer, when music sometimes fills the bandstand and the trees give welcome shade. The garden also works as a calm coffee stop after a walk by the river or the ocean. Check the events schedule before you go if you hope to catch a concert.
