Parque da Devesa

Vila Nova de Famalicao, Portugal

About this place

Parque da Devesa is a large urban park in Vila Nova de Famalicão, in northern Portugal's Braga district. It covers about 27 hectares right next to the city centre and combines greenery, a river, a lake and facilities for leisure and education. The park opened in September 2012.

How did Parque da Devesa come about?

The land used to be farmland that had lain idle for a long time. The Pelhe river runs through it from north to south, and its gentle gradient plus years of neglect made the area prone to flooding. When the park was created, the water was cleaned, the river banks were returned to a natural state, and an artificial lake fed by river water was built. Former farm buildings were rebuilt and converted into cultural and educational spaces. A water mill and its tanks were also restored.

What is there to see?

The Pelhe crosses the whole park, and its riverside tree gallery, the lakes and granite rock formations form the backbone of a walk here. You will find centuries-old oaks, sequoias, poplars, willows, cork oaks and stone pines. Open meadows alternate with wooded sections, so there is room for a picnic as well as plenty of shade.

Is it a good place for birdwatching?

Yes. Its varied habitats make the park a well-regarded birding spot, with more than 110 bird species recorded. Binoculars can be as useful as comfortable shoes.

How to spend time in Parque da Devesa

The park was designed as a place to connect with nature, relax, meet people and play sport. Locals come to run, stroll or cycle, and families choose it for a calm outing. The restored farm buildings serve cultural and educational purposes, and the park as a whole works as a venue for environmental education and sustainability.
