About this place
The portal and cruzeiro of the Misericórdia church in Loulé (Porta e cruzeiro da Misericórdia de Loulé) rank among the finest examples of Manueline style in this Algarve town in southern Portugal. The monument has two parts: the richly carved main doorway of the church and a stone cross standing just in front of it. Both have been classified as a National Monument since 1924.
What is Manueline style, and where can you see it here?
Manueline is a Portuguese variant of late Gothic from the early 16th century, known for intricate stone carving, plant motifs and twisted, rope-like elements. The Misericórdia church in Loulé holds the most expressive Manueline features in the town's religious architecture. Its portal has a flattened, polycentric arch framed by a festooned, twisting decorative composition with carved vegetal motifs. On either side rise two pinnacles, also twisted and ornately worked.
What is a cruzeiro?
A cruzeiro is a stone cross set in front of a church, a familiar sight in Portuguese religious landscapes. The one in Loulé is built into the steps leading up to the church and rests on a more recent column. It is double-faced: one side shows the Virgin with Child, the other Christ on the Cross. It dates to the early 16th century, the Manueline period.
A short history of the church
The church was built in the 15th century outside the walls of the medieval town, to the east of the old settlement. In 1570, by order of King Sebastian, it passed to the administration of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Loulé, a lay charitable brotherhood that cared for people in need. The church is also known as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Pobres.
How to visit
The portal and cross are best appreciated from outside and up close, because the appeal lies in the carving details: the twists, the leafy motifs and the pinnacles. Take a few minutes to walk along the whole facade and look at both sides of the cross. The monument lies on the eastern side of town, in the São Clemente parish, and is easy to combine with a stroll through Loulé's historic centre. Coordinates: 37.1371, -8.0221.
