About this place
Igreja Paroquial de Estoi, also called Igreja Matriz de Estoi or the Church of Saint Martin (São Martinho), is the parish church of the village of Estoi, in the municipality of Faro in the Algarve. It stands in the village centre, a short walk from the well-known pink palace, so both can easily be combined in one outing from Faro.
How did the church of Estoi come about?
The building grew out of a medieval hermitage, the Ermida de São Martinho, a small chapel dedicated to Saint Martin. In the sixteenth century Estoi became a parish seat, which called for a much larger place of worship. Enlargement began in the 1540s and was practically finished by about 1554. The humble chapel thus became the core of a full parish church.
What did the 1755 earthquake change?
The great earthquake that struck Portugal in 1755 also damaged this church, and repairs followed within a few years. Another round of works took place in the early nineteenth century, on the initiative of D. Francisco Gomes de Avelar, Bishop of the Algarve, under the Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri. Most of the structure kept the character of the older church, while a new neoclassical facade was built.
What is inside?
After the rebuilding, the church has three naves and four bays, with no transept. One shared wooden ceiling covers all the naves, and the chancel consists only of an apse. A bell tower is attached to the building.
Notable furnishings include:
- a marble pulpit made of regional stone,
- a gilded silver monstrance from the seventeenth century,
- sacred statues dating from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century.
Who is it for?
This is not a cathedral-scale sight, but it illustrates how religious architecture in the Algarve evolved over centuries: from a medieval chapel, through a Renaissance-era enlargement, to a neoclassical facade. It makes a quiet stop on a stroll through Estoi, and suits visitors interested in history, sacred art and the architecture of southern Portugal.
