Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, matriz de Alte

Loulé, Portugal

About this place

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, matriz de Alte is the parish church of Alte, a village in the municipality of Loulé, in the Portuguese Algarve interior. It joins a late Manueline structure from the Age of Discoveries with Baroque and Rococo interior decoration, which makes it one of the more rewarding heritage sites away from the coastal resorts.

How did the church in Alte come about?

The origins of the temple go back to the 13th century and the Reconquest of the Algarve. According to tradition, the church was founded late in that century and dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. The founder was Dona Bona, wife of the second lord of Alte, Garcia Mendes de Ribadaneyra, who acted in thanks for her husband's safe return from the Eighth Crusade to Palestine.

The present building is younger than that first foundation. In 1518, during one of the Order of Santiago's visits to the village, the church was recorded as "being built". It appears under the name of the mother church (matriz) only in 1554, which suggests the works had recently ended or were nearly complete.

What is the architectural style?

The church is a typical late Manueline construction, the style that shaped the Algarve in the two or three decades before the middle of the 16th century. Manueline is the Portuguese variety of late Gothic, tied to the reign of Manuel I and the age of maritime exploration. Several Manueline elements survive in the church at Alte.

What is there to see inside?

A second major building campaign took place in the Baroque and Rococo periods, in the 18th century. The interior was renewed and enriched with numerous altarpieces and azulejo panels, the painted ceramic tiles typical of Portugal. The highlights are:

  • the azulejos covering the chancel (capela-mor),
  • the gilded carved woodwork of the altarpieces in the chapels of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Nossa Senhora do Rosário and São Francisco.

The contrast between the plainer Manueline architecture and the rich 18th-century decoration is the main reason to step inside.

Where is it and how do you get there?

The church stands in Alte, in the municipality of Loulé, Faro District. Its coordinates are roughly 37.2363 N, 8.1768 W. The village lies in the Algarve interior, so a car from Loulé or the coast is the most practical way to arrive. It fits well into a longer day trip through the region's hinterland.
