Museu Almeida Moreira

Viseu, Portugal

About this place

Museu Almeida Moreira is a house museum in Viseu, central Portugal. It occupies the home of Francisco António de Almeida Moreira (1873–1939), the founder of the Museu Grão Vasco. The rooms still feel like a collector's home, with period furniture, paintings, porcelain and ceramics arranged for visitors. Admission is free.

Who was Almeida Moreira?

Almeida Moreira was a captain and a prominent figure in Viseu around the turn of the 20th century. Besides founding the Museu Grão Vasco, he built up a private collection of books, paintings, furniture, porcelain and sculpture. In his will he left the house to the city so it could serve as a "house of museum culture". The museum opened to the public in 1965, in line with that wish.

What is the building like?

The museum sits in a former manor house, a townhouse decorated with azulejos, the traditional Portuguese tiles. According to some sources the house was designed by Raul Lino, one of Portugal's leading architects of the early 20th century. When it was converted into a museum, with support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the interior was reorganised to display the whole contents of the house.

What can you see inside?

  • Paintings – the collection includes works by Portuguese artists such as Malhoa, Silva Porto, Columbano, Veloso Salgado, Sousa Lopes, Marques de Oliveira and Alfredo Keil.
  • Ceramics and tiles – the largest collection is ceramics, including pieces from various faience-producing centres across Portugal.
  • Furniture and sculpture – antique furniture, tapestries and sculptures set the scene of a well-off early 20th-century home.
  • Library – Almeida Moreira also donated his books, which is why the museum is sometimes described as a museum-library.

Where is it and how do you visit?

The museum is on Rua Soar de Cima, in the northern part of Rossio, in the heart of Viseu. It belongs to the municipal museum network, so it pairs easily with a walk through the old town and a visit to the Museu Grão Vasco. In summer (1 April to 30 September) it is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00. It is closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays. Winter hours are shorter, so check the current schedule on the city's website before you go.
