Centro de Interpretação da República Afonso Costa

Seia, Portugal

About this place

Centro de Interpretação da República Afonso Costa (CIRAC) is a themed museum in Seia, in Portugal's Serra da Estrela region, dedicated to the history of the First Portuguese Republic and to Afonso Costa, one of the leading politicians of that era. The centre opened in March 2025.

Who was Afonso Costa, and why Seia?

Afonso Costa (1871-1937) was born in Seia, and locals regard him as the town's greatest son. A statesman with a significant role in Portugal's republican politics, he is the focus of a centre meant to preserve his legacy and encourage study, research and reflection on his historical and political importance.

What can you see inside?

The core of the visit is a narrative exhibition. It walks you through the main events of the First Republic, from its proclamation on 5 October 1910 to the military coup of 28 May 1926 that ended it. It is a good stop if you want to understand the political upheavals Portugal went through in the early twentieth century.

The building

CIRAC occupies the former Afonso Costa primary school, on the avenue that bears his name. The building was completely rehabilitated for its new role. The investment exceeded 700,000 euros and was co-financed by the Centro 2020 programme.

Who is behind it?

The project is a partnership between the Municipality of Seia, Afonso Costa's family, the Mário Soares Foundation and the collector Rui Veloso, so the exhibition draws on both institutional and private collections.
