Who was Aristides de Sousa Mendes?
Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral e Abranches was born on 19 July 1885 in Cabanas de Viriato, in Casa do Passal itself. The house remained his residence for about 45 years. As a diplomat in 1940, while German forces advanced through France, he issued visas to refugees fleeing occupied France for Portugal. Historical accounts credit him with helping thousands of people. He acted against the instructions of the Salazar regime, and his decision cost him his career and his fortune.
