About this place

Casa da Ribeira in Viseu – a craft museum in a historic house

Casa da Ribeira is a small museum in the centre of Viseu, in northern Portugal. It occupies a house that dates back to the 17th century and is dedicated to regional craftsmanship. Admission is free and a visit usually takes about fifteen minutes, which makes it an easy stop on a walk through the city.

Where is Casa da Ribeira?

The building stands in central Viseu, on Largo Nossa Senhora da Conceição, opposite the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The Pavia River flows nearby, and the name "ribeira" refers to a stream or riverside area. The location makes it simple to combine the visit with a stroll through the old town.

What is the history of the house?

The original building was put up in the 17th century by a wealthy farmer from the region. In 1976 the Municipality of Viseu bought the property. In 1983 it was rebuilt and adapted for museum use in a project by architect Fernando Teixeira Gordo. The first crafts exhibition opened here in 1989. Since 27 January 2016 the building has held the status of Monument of Municipal Interest (Monumento de Interesse Municipal, MIM).

What can you see inside?

The display presents the old "industries" typical of the region, meaning traditional trades passed down through generations. The exhibition is set in a former factory and covers work in a variety of materials:

  • paper crafts,
  • basketry,
  • embroidery,
  • woodwork,
  • ceramics,
  • wrought iron,
  • stained glass.

In a single place you can see how varied the skills of local artisans were, and what everyday objects and decorations were made around Viseu.

Who is it for?

Casa da Ribeira suits travellers who want a taste of local culture without planning a long visit. Because entry is free and the tour is short, it fits easily into a day packed with other sights. Fans of traditional handicrafts, detail photography and historic architecture will find plenty to notice. It also works well for families, since it needs neither many hours nor special preparation.
