About this place
Museu Terras de Besteiros is the municipal museum of Tondela in central Portugal, housed in the historic manor house Solar de Santa Ana in the old town. It tells the story of the Besteiros territory from the first traces of human settlement to the present day. The museum opened in 2010 and is run by the Tondela municipality.
What can I see inside?
The permanent exhibition spreads over nineteen rooms. The collection is large and varied, covering archaeology, history, ethnography and sacred art. The visit is easy to follow because themes are split across two floors. The ground floor is devoted to archaeology, with an emphasis on prehistory and rock art. Upstairs you will find the ethnographic section, showing the everyday life and objects of the people who lived in the region.
The museum describes itself as a "territory museum". That means it is not limited to a single building. The collection in Solar de Santa Ana is complemented by museum sites preserved in situ, in the places where heritage was created or discovered. A visit in town can therefore become the starting point for a trip through the surrounding parishes.
Which museum sites lie outside the main building?
These can be visited by appointment:
- Anta da Arquinha da Moura in Lajeosa do Dão, a megalithic burial monument,
- Estela menir de Caparrosa in the united parishes of Caparrosa and Silvares,
- Estação de Arte Rupestre de Molelinhos in Molelos parish, a rock art site,
- Ambientes do Ar in Caparrosa and Silvares,
- Edifício das Reservas at Solar dos Almiros, where the museum's reserve collections are kept.
These visits are guided, so contact the museum before you travel.
What else does the museum offer?
Besides the permanent exhibition there are guided tours, temporary exhibitions and educational workshops. The building also has an auditorium, a documentation centre and a shop. It suits families with school-age children and anyone who wants to understand local history before exploring the wider Dão region.
