About this place
Monte do Senhor da Boa Morte is a hill in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, in the Povos area above the Tagus river in Portugal. It brings together an archaeological site, a shrine with a chapel, the ruins of an old manor house and a natural viewpoint over the river valley and the town. It is recognised as a cultural heritage monument.
What should you know about the place?
The hill sits next to Vila Franca de Xira, some distance northeast of Lisbon, at roughly 38.971 N, 8.989 W. Sources place it sometimes in Povos and sometimes in the town of Vila Franca de Xira itself, so you will meet both names in directions.
What is its history?
The municipal archaeological record describes the hill as a Site of Public Interest (SIP, Sítio de Interesse Público). Traces of Roman and medieval settlement have been found here, along with a medieval necropolis. Occupation may go back as far as the Iron Age.
At the top stands a shrine with a chapel dedicated to the Senhor da Boa Morte, the Lord of the Good Death. The present temple dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its chancel (capela-mor), from the early 16th century, shows Mudéjar features of the Manueline period. Nearby are the ruins of a manor house from the 16th to 18th centuries.
Why does the hill matter religiously?
The chapel is the destination of an important local pilgrimage. That makes the hill not only a monument but also a living place of devotion for people in the area.
What can you see from the top?
The hill is a natural lookout. You get views over the Tagus, the river plain and the rooftops of Vila Franca de Xira. It is a good spot for a short rest on a walk and for photographs at any time of day.
How do you get there and what can you do?
Walking and cycling routes lead to the hill. A popular loop of about 8 km, of moderate difficulty, starts at the sports complex in Vila Franca de Xira, passes the Convent of Santo António da Castanheira and then descends to Monte do Senhor da Boa Morte. Routes starting in Povos are described as easy. Free parking is available on site. Mountain bikers also know the hill, which has a marked trail.
The Vila Franca de Xira Municipal Museum runs free guided walks called "Passeios com História", including the Rota do Castelo de Povos. Registration is required, and current dates are listed in the municipal events calendar.
