About this place
Forte da Portela Grande – a Lines of Torres Vedras fort near Vialonga
Forte da Portela Grande (Military Work No. 41) is a surviving piece of early nineteenth-century military defence on the ridge of the Serra da Aguieira, in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, close to Vialonga. It belongs to the Lines of Torres Vedras, the network of forts that protected the Lisbon area from Napoleonic troops.
What is Forte da Portela Grande?
It is an earthwork with stone reinforcement, laid out in the shape of a star. Its job was to cover the eastern and western slopes of the Serra da Aguieira. Some sources call it a redoubt and others a fort, so the classification varies, but the number 41 stays the same.
What was its role in the Lines of Torres Vedras?
The fort is tied to the Third French Invasion of Portugal. The Lines consisted of several belts of fortifications around the capital, and the summit of the Serra da Aguieira overlooked the Bucelas gorge, one of the routes leading towards Lisbon.
Portela Grande is one of three forts of the Serra da Aguieira group, together with Forte da Aguieira (No. 40) and Forte da Portela Pequena (No. 42). The Aguieira fort was meant to cover both Portela forts and sweep the front of the mountain with fire. Portela Grande and Portela Pequena stood side by side on the ridge and complemented each other.
Garrison and armament
According to the Rota Histórica das Linhas de Torres, the fort had a garrison of 250 infantrymen and five 12-pounder guns. That was an armament suited to holding a hilltop rather than conducting wide-ranging operations.
