Castelo de Pirescoxe

Loures, Portugal

About this place

Castelo de Pirescoxe – a fortified manor near Lisbon

Castelo de Pirescoxe (spelled Pirescouxe in the municipality's own materials) stands in Santa Iria de Azoia, in the municipality of Loures, north-east of Lisbon. Although it is called a castle, it is really a fortified noble residence from the late Middle Ages. Today it houses a municipal art gallery and is one of the lesser-known historic sites close to the Portuguese capital.

What exactly is Castelo de Pirescoxe?

It is a typical example of a fifteenth-century Portuguese noble manor with defensive features. It was not built as a frontier stronghold. Its purpose was to assert the standing and wealth of its owners, which is why it received crenellated towers and was placed in a prominent spot in the landscape. The building rises on the right bank of the Tagus, at a point that allowed control of access to Lisbon by both land and river.

Who built it, and when?

According to available accounts, in 1442 Nuno Vasques de Castelo Branco and his wife Joana Zuzarte established a morgadio at Pirescoxe, an entailed estate passed intact to a single heir. That was when the residence gained the monumental character it is known for. Some sources trace the estate's origins much further back, but it was the fifteenth century that gave the building its present appearance.

What can you see inside?

After restoration, the building opened on 2 December 2001 as the Municipal Gallery of Pirescouxe Castle (Galeria Municipal do Castelo de Pirescouxe). Inside are two exhibition rooms. The permanent exhibition tells the story of the site through archaeological finds recovered during excavations. Temporary exhibitions and cultural events are also held here. Outside there is an open-air performance space, and visitors can use a café with a terrace and a car park.
