Fort of Arpim

Loures, Portugal

About this place

Fort of Arpim (Portuguese: Forte de Arpim) is an early 19th-century earthwork fort in the parish of Bucelas, municipality of Loures, in the Lisbon District of Portugal. It belongs to the Lines of Torres Vedras, the defensive system designed to shield Lisbon from French invasion. The fort has been restored and is open to visitors.

What were the Lines of Torres Vedras?

During the Peninsular War, between 1809 and 1812, more than a hundred and fifty forts, redoubts and other defensive works were built north of Lisbon. Their purpose was to stop an invading army from reaching the capital, or to cover a British evacuation by sea if it came to that. The system formed three successive lines, and the Fort of Arpim is part of the first.

When was the fort built?

The fort dates from the Napoleonic era. Portuguese Wikipedia gives 1810 as its founding year, although sources differ slightly on the exact dating. What matters most is that it never saw combat: no battle was fought here, as the French army chose not to attack the fortified hills.

What was its role in the defences?

Although it belongs to the First Line, the fort sits somewhat behind its main course, close to the boundary with Vila Franca de Xira. Together with neighbouring forts it covered the land between the Tagus river and the passes at Calhandriz and Bucelas. Its position allowed visual contact with other fortifications, especially the Calhandriz and Aguieira groups and the posts at Ajuda, so signals could be passed along the chain of defences.

What does the fort look like?

The fort has a polygonal plan surrounded by a trench. Almost all of it is built of earth, with the exception of the magazine, which is masonry. Five gun emplacements survive today, along with the magazine, where traces of wooden structures and a drainage system can still be seen. For anyone interested in military history, it is a good chance to see what a field fortification of the Napoleonic period actually looked like.

Planning a visit

  • The fort lies near Bucelas, roughly 20 km from central Lisbon, which makes it a manageable half-day trip from the city.
  • Combine it with other sites on the Rota Histórica das Linhas de Torres, the historic route linking the former fortifications.
  • Consider stopping at the interpretation centre in Bucelas, opened by Loures municipality in 2012, which explains the fortifications built during the French invasions.
  • Wear sturdy shoes: this is a hillside earthwork, not an indoor museum.
