About this place
Câmara Municipal de Alenquer is the town hall of the Alenquer municipality, housed in the historic Paços do Concelho building on Praça Luís de Camões in the centre of Alenquer, Portugal. Built in 1890 and also known as the Palácio Municipal, it is one of the town's more characterful examples of nineteenth-century civic architecture.
What is this building?
Paços do Concelho is the traditional Portuguese term for a town hall. The Alenquer building went up in 1890 in a Romantic Revivalist style. It arrived a few decades after the municipality itself took shape in 1855, a period when the surrounding area was developing around a paper mill and wool factories. Today it is still a working administrative building rather than a museum.
What can you see here?
The highlight is a set of four medallions with portrait busts on the walls. They honour four figures the town claims as its own:
- King Manuel I,
- the poet Luís de Camões, who gives his name to the square outside,
- the humanist and chronicler Damião de Góis, born in Alenquer,
- Pero de Alenquer, a pilot from the Age of Discovery.
Inside you will also find portraits of the Viscount of Chanceleiros and Guilherme João Carlos Henriques, painted by Ribeiro Cristino. If local history interests you, it is a quick and free stop worth adding to a walk through town.
How do you get there, and when should you go?
The address is Praça Luís de Camões, 2580-318 Alenquer. The square sits in the town centre, so once you have parked, everything nearby is reachable on foot. Public service hours run Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, which is the time to aim for if you want to step inside. At weekends you can still admire the facade from the square and take photographs.
On Tuesdays from 10:00 to 12:00 the "Câmara de Portas Abertas" (Open Doors) initiative lets residents meet the mayor, deputy mayor and councillors at the Paços do Concelho without a formal appointment.
