About this place
Castle of Alenquer (Castelo de Alenquer)
The Castle of Alenquer is a medieval fortress in the town of Alenquer, in the Lisbon District of Portugal, at roughly 39.06° N, 9.01° W. Its story runs from Muslim rule through the Christian conquest to royal ownership and a spell under the Knights Templar.
How did the castle begin?
The area, then called "Alan Cana", was taken by Muslim forces in 714. They established an alcaçova, a fortified citadel, which became the core of the later castle. For centuries the site served as a defensive point in a region that lay between Christian and Muslim territories.
Who captured it in 1148?
In 1148 the fortress fell to Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and his troops after a siege of about two months. He probably repaired the fortifications and settled his supporters in the town and surrounding lands, tying Alenquer firmly into the growing kingdom.
What role did it play in the Middle Ages?
By the first half of the 13th century the castle counted among the important defensive structures north of Lisbon. In the early 1200s King Sancho I built a palace here and gave it to his daughter Sancha. To settle the resulting dispute, Pope Innocent III placed the castle in the custody of the Knights Templar in 1216.
What changed in the 14th century?
Around the middle of the 14th century the castle became part of the estate of the Queens of Portugal, which is why the town is often linked with queens. The fortress was rebuilt at this time, and a square tower near the river, the Torre da Couraça, was added and connected to the castle. It gave defenders a protected link to the water supply, a vital advantage during a siege.
