About this place
Castro de Moldes is an Iron Age archaeological site on a hilltop in the municipality of Viana do Castelo, in northern Portugal. The fortified settlement, also known as Castro do Monte do Castelo de Neiva, lies in the parish of Castelo do Neiva on the right bank of the Neiva River. It is a good place to picture how people lived in the far northwest of the Iberian Peninsula before and during the arrival of Rome.
What is a castro?
A castro is a fortified hilltop settlement, typical of the castro culture that dominated the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula during the Iron Age. Communities chose elevated ground with good views and protected themselves with stone walls. Castro de Moldes is one of these sites around Viana do Castelo, and it carries great importance for the parish and its local history.
What did the excavations reveal?
Excavations in the first half of the 1980s uncovered a settlement of considerable size. Its defences are the highlight: five concentric lines of walls, reinforced by towers on the southern slope. The houses were round, and some had vestibules. Paved streets ran between them, which suggests planned layout rather than random building.
The finds point to intensive Romanization. Life on the hill did not stop when Rome arrived; residents took up new customs and goods.
History after the Iron Age
The hill's strategic position mattered in the Middle Ages too. The first known reference to a castle here dates from the early 12th century. Since 1970 the site has held the status of Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público), meaning it is officially protected as a monument.
Visiting
The coordinates are roughly 41.614 N, 8.785 W. The castro is part of the municipal archaeological route of Viana do Castelo and is listed among the attractions of the local geopark. You can also reach it on foot: the circular PR13 trail (Trilho do Castro de Moldes) is about 11 km long and rated low difficulty, so it suits a relaxed family outing.
