About this place
Câmara Municipal de Barcelos is the town hall of Barcelos, a historic town in Braga District, northern Portugal. Also known as the Paços do Concelho, it was never built as a single project. The complex grew through successive remodellings and extensions around an old civic core, and traces of its earlier uses are still part of its fabric.
What is this building and why look at it?
For a visitor it works as a landmark in the historic centre and as a good example of how Portuguese towns folded charitable and religious institutions into their civic architecture. It is a working administrative building, so most people come to see the exterior and its surroundings rather than to tour the interior.
What is the history of the Paços do Concelho?
The present complex incorporates parts of the former Hospital do Espírito Santo, which housed pilgrims, and the old chapel of Santa Maria. A commemorative plaque cited in local write-ups says the hospital and chapel operated on the site from 1500 to 1836, after which the Misericórdia moved to the Capuchos convent. A remodelling begun in 1849 aimed to unify the complex; building the new town hall meant tearing down the façade of the old church, leaving only side walls and the chapel.
The twentieth century brought another rebuilding plan. An archive document records that a loan taken out in 1927 was meant to cover, among other things, reconstruction of the town hall. The design was entrusted to architect Raúl Lino in 1928, but the municipality's money problems in the late 1920s and through the 1930s delayed the work.
What else is nearby?
Barcelos has the fifteenth-century Porta Nova tower and several fountains, including those at Largo da Porta Nova and the Campo da Feira. The town lies on the Portuguese Way of St James toward Santiago de Compostela, so pilgrims often stop here for a night and a stroll through the centre. The municipality has 61 parishes, the most of any in Portugal, and the town itself had about 26,000 residents in 2021.
How to plan a visit
Pair the town hall with a walk through the old centre: the Porta Nova tower and other sights are within walking distance. Treat the interior as a bonus, since access follows office hours. Market day in Barcelos is a good time to come, when the centre is at its liveliest.
