Casa do Feital

Braga, Portugal

About this place

Casa do Feital in Braga

Casa do Feital is a Baroque country residence from the late 18th century, located in the municipality of Braga, in the united parishes of Merelim São Pedro and Frossos. The municipality describes it as one of the most singular Baroque buildings in its territory, and in November 2025 it was classified as a monument of municipal interest.

Who built Casa do Feital?

D. João Pereira Forjaz Coutinho had the house built in the late 1700s. It did not begin as an ordinary home but as a hunting pavilion, a place tied to hunting and countryside leisure. Over time it was adapted into a residence.

Who owned it?

After its conversion, the house served as a summer residence for the family of Casa dos Biscainhos, one of Braga's best-known palaces. The family kept the property for several generations. In the early 21st century it was sold to a company, closing a long chapter of family ownership.

Why does Casa do Feital matter?

According to the municipality, it is a unique example of Baroque architecture with recognised value and relevant interest for the cultural and architectural heritage of the municipality. The building has appeared in Braga's Architectural Heritage Inventory since 1993. The latest formal step came in autumn 2025, when the municipal executive unanimously approved its classification as a monument of municipal interest, following a process opened in July 2025.

Where is Casa do Feital?

The house stands in the parish of Frossos, on the edge of Braga, in the Minho region of northern Portugal. Braga is one of the country's oldest cities and an important religious and historical centre, so this residence adds a secular, aristocratic strand to a visit, away from the strict city centre.

What to know before visiting

Casa do Feital is a former private residence that has belonged to a company since the early 21st century. Do not assume the interiors are regularly open to visitors, so check current information with the city council or the local tourist office before travelling. Even so, the building and its surroundings are of interest to anyone curious about architectural history, the Baroque and the noble culture of northern Portugal.
