About this place
Citânia de Briteiros is an archaeological site of the Castro culture in the municipality of Guimarães, northern Portugal. It lies about 15 km northeast of the city centre, in the civil parish of Briteiros São Salvador e Briteiros Santa Leocádia, and counts among the best-excavated sites in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
What is Citânia de Briteiros?
A fortified hilltop settlement whose size and dense layout earn it the label "proto-urban". It is best known as an Iron Age town, yet digs have shown repeated phases of occupation, with traces running from the Bronze Age through to the Middle Ages. In Portuguese archaeology, a "citânia" is a large castro-type settlement.
What will you see on site?
Expect outlines of stone houses, lanes and defensive walls spread across the hillside. The plan makes it easy to picture a crowded community living here more than two thousand years ago. One house has been rebuilt on the site to show how the original structures may have looked. Systematic excavation began in 1874 under Francisco Martins Sarmento, and the society named after him in Guimarães continued the research.
How do you get to Citânia de Briteiros?
Driving from Guimarães is the easiest option: roughly 15 km northeast towards the Briteiros parish. The coordinates are 41.5275 N, 8.3158 W, handy for satnav. Public transport is limited, so without a car consider a taxi from Guimarães.
When should you go, and what should you bring?
The site is open-air and set on a hill, so wear sturdy shoes. Dry spring days and early autumn suit it best. Allow a few hours for a full walk, and check opening times with the Sociedade Martins Sarmento or Guimarães municipality before setting out.
What else is nearby?
Pair the visit with Guimarães itself, whose historic centre is UNESCO-listed and often described as the birthplace of Portugal. Ancient settlement first, medieval streets after, makes a neat day.
