About this place
Casa e Quinta da Boa Viagem in Viana do Castelo
Casa e Quinta da Boa Viagem is a historic country estate on the slopes of Santa Luzia hill in Viana do Castelo, northern Portugal. Portuguese heritage records protect the whole ensemble: the manor house, the chapel, an olive-tree avenue and a wayside cross (cruzeiro). Part of the estate now operates as rural tourism accommodation, so a visit can combine heritage viewing with an overnight stay.
What is this place?
The manor dates from the 17th century. It has an L-shaped plan and follows the traditional medieval tower-house type, with a further wing attached at one end. It is a typical example of northern Portuguese noble architecture: compact, practical and set among vineyards and pine groves.
The estate's history goes back to the early 1600s. In 1608 Gonçalo Ferreira Villalobos and his wife Catarina Álvares de Seixas set up, in their will, the Boa Viagem entail and an endowment for the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem (Our Lady of Safe Journey) on land next to Santa Luzia hill. The chapel's dedication gave the whole complex its name.
What to see
The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem
The chapel has a rectangular plan. The main doorway is a rounded arch, preceded by a porch resting on Tuscan columns. Inside is a gilded wooden altarpiece with an image of the patron saint. It is a modest but well-preserved place of worship, closely tied to the family that founded the entail.
The olive avenue and cruzeiro
The ensemble also includes an avenue of olive trees and a cruzeiro, a stone cross of the kind found throughout northern Portugal. Together with the chapel and the house, they form one planned whole protected as a cultural heritage monument.
The gardens
The gardens feature sculptures and fountains, surrounded by vines and pine groves. They suit a quiet walk or a conversation in the open air.
Staying and visiting
In the last decade of the 20th century the estate was adapted for accommodation. Today it operates as a rural tourism property with an outdoor swimming pool and well-kept gardens, promoted by the Viana do Castelo municipality among places to stay. Access to the interiors and chapel depends on the owners' rules, so it is worth contacting the hosts before you go.
Where is it?
The estate lies in the municipality of Viana do Castelo, at the foot of the Serra de Santa Luzia, at roughly 41.7226 N, 8.8510 W. Santa Luzia is one of the best-known landmarks of the town, so a visit here pairs easily with exploring the surroundings.
