Veli vrh

Town of Rab, Croatia

About this place

Veli vrh is a hill on the island of Rab, within the Town of Rab municipality, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia. It sits in the hilly southeastern interior of the island, at approximately 44.7°N, 14.833333°E — part of the ridge system stretching toward Kamenjak, the island's highest point.

Where exactly is Veli vrh?

The hill lies in the raised, inland part of Rab, away from the coastal towns. The landscape here is typical of the Kvarner islands: limestone terrain, low Mediterranean scrub (maquis), and scattered pine groves. Veli vrh belongs to a network of hills connecting further on to the trails leading up Kamenjak (408 m), the island's largest and most recognisable ridge, which shields Rab from the bura wind.

How do you get to Veli vrh?

Marked hiking trails lead to the hill from the town of Rab and nearby settlements on the island. One route linking points in this part of the island runs roughly 8 kilometres with about 200 metres of total ascent, putting it in the moderate-to-hard category depending on the exact path chosen. Some trails in the area connect into a longer traverse through Veli Mel, Kamenjak and Vršani, which makes it possible to plan a full-day walk across the island's interior.

The most convenient starting point is the town of Rab itself or one of the nearby villages, from where the waymarked paths climb through old farmland and pastures before reaching the rockier, higher ground.

What will you see along the way?

A walk around Veli vrh is above all a chance to experience the wilder, stonier side of Rab, far from the beaches and crowds. The route passes terraced, partly abandoned fields, dry-stone walls, and patches of maquis and pine forest. From the higher sections there are views over the rest of the island, neighbouring islands of the Kvarner archipelago, and — on clear days — the Velebit mountain range on the mainland.

This is a route for travellers looking for the quieter, hiking side of Rab, a contrast to the lively historic centre of Rab town with its four bell towers.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the best seasons for hiking here, with milder temperatures than midsummer and the maquis vegetation green and in bloom. In summer, with strong sun and little shade along most of the route, it is worth setting out early in the morning and carrying plenty of water.
