Gromovača

Gromovača is a peak in Northern Velebit National Park, within the municipality of Grad Senj in Lika-Senj County, Croatia. Rising to 1,676 metres, it is the highest point of the Rožanski Kukovi group, one of the most distinctive rocky sections of the Velebit mountain range.

What makes Gromovača worth visiting?

The peak is essentially a massive rock formation towering directly above the famous Premužić Trail (Premužićeva staza), a 57-kilometre path built between 1930 and 1933 that links northern and southern Velebit. From a distance Gromovača doesn't look particularly tall — its character only reveals itself up close, where hikers find jagged rock blocks and narrow passages threaded through dwarf pine.

Gromovača is also included on the Via Dinarica White Trail, listed among the 72 named summits along this long-distance route that runs across the mountains of the Western Balkans.

How do you get to the top?

The route to Gromovača starts on the Premužić Trail itself. From the trailhead, it's roughly 4.2 km of well-marked, moderately easy walking to the turnoff toward the summit. From that signpost, only about 240 metres of distance and 70 metres of elevation gain remain — but this final stretch is steep, rocky, and demands care, cutting partly through dwarf pine scrub. Despite its difficulty, the climb is short and typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

The nearest mountain hut is Rossijeva koliba, located around 800 metres southeast of the summit — a natural stop before or after the ascent.

From the top of Gromovača, wide views open toward the Adriatic Sea and across a large stretch of Northern Velebit's rugged terrain. The landscape is classic karst: jagged ridges, stony hollows, and mountain ranges visible far into the distance. Vistas like this are among the reasons Northern Velebit was declared a national park in 1999.

When should you visit?

Late spring, summer, and early autumn are the best times to hike here, when the trail is free of snow and the rocky final approach is safer to negotiate. Because of the exposure and altitude, the route can turn hazardous in winter and early spring, requiring mountaineering experience and proper gear.
