Mali Rajinac

Mali Rajinac is the highest peak of Northern Velebit, rising above the village of Krasno in Croatia at an elevation of 1,699 metres. Despite its name — "mali" means "small" in Croatian — the mountain is anything but modest, standing out as one of the most recognisable landmarks in this part of the range.

Where is Mali Rajinac located?

The peak lies within Northern Velebit National Park, itself part of the wider Velebit Nature Park. It rises just south of the grassy Jezera plateau, from which one of the marked trails to the summit begins. Its approximate coordinates are 44.7944 N, 15.0128 E. The nearest access point is the village of Krasno, sitting at around 800 metres on the northern slopes of Velebit — one of the largest mountain villages in the region.

What does the mountain look like?

The lower slopes are covered in beech forest, while the upper section turns rocky and open. A plaque placed on the summit by the mountaineering club "Zagorske staze" marks it as the highest point of Northern Velebit. How do you get to the summit?

The most common approach to Mali Rajinac starts from the Zavižan mountain lodge (Planinarski dom Zavižan). The shortest route branches off at the northwestern edge of the Jezera plateau and heads straight toward Generalski Dolci, reaching the summit in around 2 hours. An alternative variation follows the Krasno route past the Crikvina junction in the middle of Jezera, extending the climb to roughly 2.5 hours from the lodge. A longer and more demanding option links Krasno, Mali Rajinac and Zavižan into a single trail covering well over 20 kilometres with more than a thousand metres of elevation gain — a route generally rated as hard and best suited to fit, experienced hikers.

When is the best time to visit?

The most favourable window for hiking runs from March to October, when trails are clear and mountain weather is relatively stable. Outside this period, routes can be snow-covered or icy, requiring proper winter gear and experience.
