Štěpánovská hora

Hrobčice, Czechia

About this place

Štěpánovská hora is a forested volcanic hill in the Bohemian Central Uplands (České středohoří), rising just north of the village of Štěpánov, roughly 4 km west of Milešov, within the municipality of Hrobčice in the Teplice district. Built from nephelinite, it reaches an elevation of 651 metres and belongs to the Kostomlaty Central Uplands geomorphological subunit, part of the wider volcanic range shaped by Tertiary volcanic activity.

Why is the hillside protected?

On the slope of the hill, between 560 and 615 metres above sea level, a small nature monument covering 0.52 hectares has been established. It protects one of only two highest-lying steppe meadows anywhere in the Bohemian Central Uplands — a habitat that is unusual at this altitude, since xerothermic grasslands of this kind typically occur much lower down. The sun-exposed, dry and rocky volcanic terrain has allowed steppe-type vegetation to take hold, making the site an important spot on the natural-heritage map around Teplice.

What can visitors find at the summit?

Beyond its natural value, Štěpánovská hora also preserves traces of ancient settlement. On the southeastern spur of the massif, remnants of a prehistoric hillfort from the Bronze Age have survived. Later, close to a thousand years before our era, the hill was inhabited by people of the Hallstatt culture. On the southwestern slope, the remains of characteristic defensive ramparts and ditches that once enclosed a fortified settlement are still visible today. For anyone interested in archaeology and history, this makes the hill one of the more rewarding stops in the region, combining scenic value with a tangible link to people who lived here millennia ago.

How to get to Štěpánovská hora?

The hill rises directly above the villages of Hrobčice and Štěpánov, making it an easily reachable destination for anyone exploring the area around Milešov and the Bohemian Central Uplands. Because of its protected status — both as part of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area and as a separate nature monument — visitors should stick to marked trails to avoid damaging the fragile steppe vegetation growing on its slopes.
