Smědavská hora

Smědavská hora is a 1,084-meter peak in the Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory), rising from a side spur of the Hejnice ridge near the town of Hejnice. It's a good pick for hikers who want a quiet, forested summit away from the crowds drawn to neighboring Smrk.

How do you get to Smědavská hora?

The usual starting point is the mountain hamlet of Smědava, tucked at the foot of the peak, home to a small cluster of houses and the Smědava mountain hut, from which several trails fan out across the Jizera Mountains. From there, a marked path climbs to the summit mostly through spruce forest, with a moderate gradient that suits most hikers, families included. No special preparation is needed, but sturdy trekking boots are worth having — the ground can get muddy, especially after rain.

Hejnice makes a convenient base: you can drive to Smědava or hike there through the forest, turning the trip into a longer, scenic outing.

What will you see at the summit?

The top is covered in spruce forest that is still relatively low-growing, which — unlike many forested Jizera Mountains peaks — opens up views to the west, north, and northeast, where the distinctive silhouette of Smrk, the highest peak in the Czech part of the Jizera Mountains, comes into view.

At the very summit sits a boulder known as the Borůvkový kámen (Blueberry Stone), where a box holding a summit logbook has been placed since 1976 — a traditional feature of Czech mountain hiking that lets visitors leave a record of having reached the top.

About 700 meters southeast of the summit lies the Vlčí louka (Wolf Meadow) natural monument, a protected patch of wet mountain meadow valued for the rare flora typical of the high-altitude bogs and meadows of the Jizera Mountains.

The mountain's name is no accident: its southern slope holds the source of the Smědá River, one of the region's more significant waterways, which continues on through the Frýdlant Foothills.

When should you visit?

Late spring through summer (May–September) is the best window for hiking, when trails are dry and the meadows around Vlčí louka are in full bloom. Autumn brings quiet and the characteristic colors of the spruce forest, though daylight hours shorten. In winter the area attracts cross-country skiers — Smědava is one of the more popular starting points for ski trails in the Jizera Mountains — though reaching the summit itself calls for extra caution given snow and shorter days.
