Paličník

Paličník is a rocky viewpoint in the Czech Jizera Mountains, rising above the village of Bílý Potok right on the border with Poland. At 944 metres above sea level, it ranks among the most popular lookout spots in this part of the range, prized for the combination of a dramatic rock formation and a wide-open view over the Smědá valley.

Paličník is a massive rock block emerging straight out of the forest, climbable thanks to metal railings and handholds installed back at the start of the 20th century (1902) by a local mountain club. Near the summit, the rock splits into a deep crevasse, crossed by a wooden footbridge that secures the final steps to the highest viewing point.

From the top, the view opens across the Smědá valley toward the surrounding peaks of the Jizera Mountains. On a clear day you can pick out Smrk — the highest Czech summit in the Jizeras, topped with its own lookout tower — along with Jizera, the neighbouring Tišina, and the striking rock formations of Frýdlantské cimbuří and Ořešník. Looking west, the distant ridgeline of the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) comes into view.

How to get there?

The most common approach follows the yellow-marked trail from Bílý Potok, starting at the Bártlova bouda lodge — roughly 3 kilometres, with steep and demanding stretches near the top. An alternative route comes in from the Smrek summit, and hikers from Poland can also start out from Świeradów-Zdrój, taking advantage of the trail network that links both sides of the border. Given the rocky final stretch and the steeper sections, sturdy hiking boots are strongly recommended.

When should you visit?

Paličník can be visited year-round, but spring and autumn offer the best conditions, with clearer air and the longest visibility. In autumn, the Smědá valley and surrounding forests turn especially photogenic in their seasonal colours. Summer brings a steady stream of hikers and cyclists, so the rocky viewpoint can get crowded on weekends. In winter, extra caution is needed — icy rock surfaces and slippery steps make the final approach to the summit noticeably trickier.
