Tišina

Lázně Libverda, Czechia

About this place

Tišina is a modest but distinctive summit of the Jizera Mountains (872.9 m above sea level), rising above Lázně Libverda just across the border in the Czech Republic. For spa guests staying nearby and hikers heading deeper into the range, it's the natural first waypoint on the way toward Smrk, the highest peak of the Jizera Mountains.

What will you see on Tišina?

The summit takes the shape of a rocky ridge built from porphyritic granite and granodiorite — a hard rock that has resisted erosion better than the surrounding terrain, leaving behind sharp outcrops. Climbers have long been drawn to these rocks for short, technical routes away from the crowds found at the region's larger climbing areas.

The slopes are covered in mixed forest: spruce lower down, giving way higher up to beech woodland mixed with fir, maple and rowan. This is part of a much larger forest complex, today protected as part of the Jizerskohorské bučiny National Nature Reserve (Tišina held its own separate reserve status until 1999). The old-growth character of the woodland here gives even a short stretch of trail near the summit a different feel from the more open, wind-battered stretches higher up in the range.

The summit itself doesn't offer sweeping views — the trees are too dense for that — but the quiet and seclusion (the name itself translates roughly to "silence") are exactly the point. It works best as a resting point partway through a longer hike, not a destination in its own right.

How do you get to Tišina from Lázně Libverda?

The most popular approach follows the red-marked trail straight out of the spa town. The route passes Jizerská chata and Hubertka — where a short detour leads to the Kočičí kameny viewpoint — before continuing past Francouzské kameny to Tišina and on to the Nebeský žebřík crossroads. Up to this point, the walk is of moderate difficulty, mostly on forest roads and gently graded paths.

Hikers with more time and stamina often combine Tišina with a continued walk to Smrk, the highest peak in the Jizera Mountains. A full loop of this kind from Lázně Libverda runs to roughly 20 km and takes a full day, but it's just as easy to turn back at Tišina and return to the spa by the same or a parallel route, turning the outing into a few-hour walk instead.

When should you visit?

Late spring and summer bring the greenest forest and the driest, easiest trails — a solid choice for families and less experienced walkers. Autumn, especially October, is when the light works best on the rock outcrops and the turning beech woods. In winter the trail can be snow-covered and calls for proper footwear, but the hush of the forest at that time of year has its own appeal — for many visitors, it's the most authentic way to experience the Jizera Mountains.

Thanks to its modest elevation and gentle terrain profile, Tišina is accessible more or less year-round, though it's worth checking current trail conditions before setting out, particularly after snowfall.

Frequently asked questions

How high is Tišina? The summit stands at 872.9 m above sea level, about 1.5 km northeast of the village of Bílý Potok.
