About this place
Skalka Castle is a Baroque manor house in the village of Podbřezí, which also includes the hamlet of Lhota Netřeba, roughly 6 km southeast of Dobruška in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. The building sits on a rocky spur above the Zlatý potok valley, a setting that gave the estate its name.
When was Skalka first mentioned in records?
The earliest written record of a fortified seat at Podbřezí dates to 1360, naming Ješek and Půta of Skalka as owners. Ownership passed through several hands over the following two centuries until, in 1567, the estate returned to descendants of the founding family, the Ostrovský of Skalka, who rebuilt the old stronghold into a Renaissance château at the end of the 16th century.
How did the current Baroque château come about?
Once the Ostrovský line died out, the Mladota of Solopysky family inherited the estate. Under their ownership the château was demolished almost to its foundations and rebuilt entirely in the Baroque style. In 1739, Antonín Josef Mladota and his wife completed a new Baroque château with a chapel, raised on the exact footprint of the earlier medieval seat. Aside from minor later alterations, this is essentially the building that still stands today.
What happened to the estate in the 19th and 20th centuries?
In 1800 Gundakar Colloredo-Mansfeld purchased Skalka and folded it into the large Opočno estate, after which the château served merely as the seat of a farm administrator rather than a residence in its own right. Things changed after the 1925 land reform, when the Martinec couple acquired the property. They kept it until 1948, when it passed to the Czechoslovak state, which established a museum there dedicated to the writer Alois Jirásek, tied to his novel "Temno" (Darkness).
Can visitors go inside Skalka Castle today?
The château is not open to the public and remains closed to regular tourist traffic, setting it apart from several other manor houses in the Podorlicko region that welcome seasonal visitors. Even so, the building itself — perched dramatically on its rocky outcrop above the Zlatý potok — is a clear landmark in the landscape and can be seen well from the walking trails running through Podbřezí, Lhota, and Netřeba.
What is worth knowing about Lhota Netřeba?
Lhota Netřeba is a small hamlet forming part of the Podbřezí municipality, alongside other outlying settlements such as Škutina, Chábor, Studánka, and Přímy. Electricity did not reach the hamlet until 1927, a detail that reflects the quiet, rural character of this corner of Podorlicko. For travelers looking for a taste of regional history away from crowds, the area around Skalka Castle and its neighboring hamlets makes for an interesting stop on a route through eastern Bohemia — closer to nature than to the region's better-known mass-tourism sites.
