Šćah

Lukoran, Croatia

About this place

Šćah is the highest peak on the island of Ugljan, rising above the village of Lukoran in the Zadar archipelago. At just under 290 metres, it isn't a demanding mountain, but its rocky summit delivers one of the finest panoramas in the whole Zadar area, making it a favourite short hike for both locals and visitors staying on the island.

How do you get to Šćah?

The trailhead is near the cemetery in Lukoran, where it makes sense to leave a car. From there a marked path leads to the top, and most walkers cover it in under an hour. The climb isn't technically difficult, but it runs across open, rocky ground with little shade, so it's worth setting off in the morning or late afternoon during summer and bringing water and sturdy shoes. Much of the trail winds past dry stone walls typical of the Lukoran landscape — a building technique now recognised on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, and one that has survived here in unusually good condition.

What will you see at the top?

Šćah rises above the settlements of Turkija and Korčulanići, and from its summit the whole Zadar archipelago unfolds below. On one side you can see Zadar and the Velebit mountain range, and on the other the Kornati islands and neighbouring parts of the archipelago. The peak itself is marked by a wooden cross set into a small pile of stones, with a granite plaque bearing the name and elevation embedded in one of the rocks — a modest but meaningful marker that has long served islanders as a landmark.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with milder temperatures and generally clearer visibility, away from the summer haze that often settles over the sea. Summer hikes are perfectly doable, but since the exposed terrain offers almost no shade, it's best to avoid the middle of the day. After rain or in winter the rocky path can get slippery, so shoes with good grip are worth packing.

What else is worth combining with the hike?

Lukoran itself has a cultural-historical trail connecting notable spots from the village's past and present, explained on information panels in several languages. It pairs naturally with a walk up Šćah — touring the village takes little time and gives useful context for the surrounding landscape, including those dry stone walls. You could also plan the day around a swim near Lukoran or nearby Preko, which has ferry connections to Zadar.
