Križ

Križ is a hill in the Municipality of Bibinje, in Zadar County, rising to around 152 metres above sea level. This unassuming elevation above Bibinje holds one of the more significant chapters of modern Croatian history and offers one of the best vantage points over the Zadar area.

Why is Križ historically significant?

During the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s, Križ hill held major strategic value — from its summit, artillery could target Zadar and control movement along the Adriatic highway, the main road connecting the coastal towns. Whoever controlled this point had real influence over the security of the entire surrounding area.

In May 1992, Croatian forces launched an operation codenamed "Jaguar" to retake the hill. The operation ran from 17 to 23 May 1992. On the very first day, communication between the hill's defenders and other forces was cut off, and the position on Križ remained under blockade for the following five days. The operation ended on 23 May 1992 with the surrender of the garrison holding the hill. Liberating Križ significantly reduced the artillery threat to Zadar.

A sixteen-metre illuminated cross stands on the highest point of the terrain, visible not only from Bibinje itself but also from Zadar, Sukošan, and the wider Kotari area. The summit's position also offers a wide view over the coastline, the islands of the Zadar archipelago, and the strip of land running along the Adriatic highway.

How do you get to Križ hill?

The hill sits directly above the village of Bibinje, a few kilometres south of Zadar. The easiest way to get there is by car — local roads lead from the centre of Bibinje toward the elevation, after which the final stretch to the summit is on foot. Given its short distance from Zadar, a trip up Križ is easy to combine with sightseeing in the city and visits to nearby beaches.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are the best times to climb the hill, when temperatures are milder and visibility toward the sea and islands tends to be at its best. In summer, it's worth going early in the morning or late afternoon and avoiding the hottest hours of the day, since the terrain is exposed with almost no shade.
