About this place
Parque Venâncio Ribeiro da Costa is one of the most distinctive green spaces in the municipality of Palmela, Portugal. It runs from the top of the castle hill down its northern slope and covers about 37,000 square metres. Locals also call it the Esplanada or Mata do Castelo, the Castle Forest.
Where is the park and why visit?
The park sits just below Palmela Castle and links the fortress with the oldest part of the town. For many residents it is the green lung of the area: a place for an unhurried walk in the shade, with views over the town and countryside. Some spots on the slope look down on Palmela's rooftops at the foot of the hill, which makes the park popular with photographers.
It is a natural stop when visiting the castle. After exploring the walls and towers, you can follow the paths downhill, rest under the trees and return to the town centre by a different route.
What is the history of the park?
The park was created in the early twentieth century as a place for leisure and culture. Its designers wanted to recreate the atmosphere of the forests of Sintra, which is why the grounds feel like a wooded, romantic garden on a steep hillside. From the start it has served as a meeting place and a venue for outdoor events, and it still does.
What can you do here?
After its redevelopment the park was divided into themed zones. You will find:
- a maintenance circuit (circuito de manutenção) for running and outdoor exercise,
- an amphitheatre that hosts concerts, performances and other cultural events,
- a new amphitheatre near the Scouts' headquarters,
- an open-air cinema screening area,
- a picnic area with a snack bar,
- a botanical garden,
- a children's playground,
- a space for antique fairs and swap meets.
This makes the park a good fit for families with children as well as for anyone after a quiet stroll or a workout.
Is the whole park open?
The park was damaged by storms and closed for repairs. The works were estimated at 60,200 euros and were expected to take four months. Later reports described structural problems more serious than the municipality had anticipated. Before you go, check the Palmela municipality website or visitpalmela.pt to see which areas are currently open.
