Parque Municipal do Montijo

Montijo, Portugal

About this place

Parque Municipal do Montijo, officially the Parque Municipal Carlos Hidalgo Gomes de Loureiro, is the green heart of Montijo in Portugal's Setúbal district. It sits in the central part of town and has served residents for almost a century as a place to stroll, relax and let children play.

Where is the park and how big is it?

The park lies in the centre of Montijo, so it slots easily into a walk around town. It covers about 3.5 hectares in a rectangle roughly 270 metres long and 120 metres wide. That is enough to feel a break from street traffic, yet small enough to walk around comfortably in about an hour.

What is the history of the park?

It is one of the oldest public gardens in the Montijo area. The local authority decided to create it in 1929, and the first works followed the traditional Portuguese style. In 1952 a complete renovation was proposed. The project went to Francisco Caldeira Cabral (1909–1992), a landscape architect trained in Berlin and regarded as a pioneer of landscape architecture teaching in Portugal. He presented his plan on 10 January 1956, and after some changes it was approved in 1959. The park's namesake, Carlos Hidalgo Gomes de Loureiro, was mayor of the town in the 1930s.

What will you see in the park?

The layout combines a large lawn, winding paths, clusters of trees and seating areas. The trees are native species: oaks, cork oaks, poplars, ash, lindens, alders, laurels and cedars. They give shade in summer and colour the paths in autumn.

What is there for families?

There is a children's playground and a sports court (ringue) for team games. The Domus bar serves ice cream and drinks on warmer days. The park works well as a stop for families, and equally for anyone looking for a quiet spot with a book.
