Parque Urbano do Vale Fundão

Lizbona, Portugal

About this place

Parque Urbano do Vale Fundão is a city park in Lisbon's Marvila district, in the eastern part of the city. It covers about 9 hectares in Chelas, between zones I and J of that neighbourhood. It is a green space for residents rather than a ticketed attraction, but it shows a less touristy side of Lisbon.

Where is the park and how do you get there?

The address is Avenida Marechal António de Spínola, Marvila. Housing blocks of Chelas surround the park, so it works best as a stop on a walk through the eastern districts of the Portuguese capital. The entrance is wheelchair accessible and there is parking nearby.

What is the history of the place?

This part of Lisbon used to consist of quintas, estates used for farming and leisure. From the 1940s, many plots in the area were expropriated for roads and housing developments. The land that is now the park escaped these projects. In the early 1970s, planting began on the Chelas woodland, intended to serve the surrounding housing estates. Today it goes by the name Parque do Vale Fundão.

What can you do here?

The park is mainly greenery with walking paths, a children's playground and urban furniture for resting. It suits a quiet stroll, a break and outdoor exercise. As part of the site's upgrade, pedestrian access routes were built and a horticultural area with garden plots was created.

Frequently asked questions

Is entry paid? We found no information about admission fees. The park is open daily, 24 hours.

Can I bring a dog? Yes, dogs are accepted.

Is it good for families with children? Yes, there is a playground and the park is considered suitable for children.

Is it accessible for people with disabilities? The entrance is wheelchair accessible.

Is it the same as Parque Urbano do Vale de Chelas? No. Vale de Chelas is a separate, larger city park of 15 hectares, opened by Lisbon's city council on 17 May 2025, with about 220 community garden plots. Vale Fundão is smaller and older in its current form.

Who is it for?

If you explore Lisbon off the beaten track, the park is a sensible addition to a visit to Marvila. Locals use it every day, so expect a calm, neighbourhood atmosphere rather than spectacular views or monuments. It works well as a break from sightseeing, a place for a short walk with children or a dog, or a stop on an eastern route through the city.

Because the park is open around the clock, you choose when to visit. Daytime is the most pleasant, when you can see the paths, the greenery and the garden area. Bring water, as the descriptions do not suggest any food outlets on site.
