Vale do Silêncio Park

Lizbona, Portugal

About this place

Parque do Vale do Silêncio is one of the main green spaces in eastern Lisbon, set in the Olivais parish. Covering roughly 9 hectares, it has long served local residents as a place for everyday rest, running and outdoor gatherings. It is also known as Mata do Vale do Silêncio or Mata dos Olivais.

Where is Vale do Silêncio and what is it like?

The park lies in eastern Lisbon, in Olivais, at about 38.7667 N, 9.1187 W. It is a green pocket surrounded by newer residential development rather than a classic sightseeing stop. It suits visitors who want to see how Lisbon residents spend their free time away from the centre.

What is the history of the park?

The park dates from the 1950s and was designed by architect Manuel Sousa da Câmara, with drawings by Álvaro Dentinho. It was conceived as the "lungs of Olivais": an area meant to improve air quality and offer recreation and meeting space for the new neighbourhood around it. That purpose still shows today, as the park works first of all as a shared space for locals.

What can you see and do here?

The layout combines spacious central lawns with tree-covered areas where shade and quiet are easy to find. The ground is almost entirely grassed. Asphalt paths run through the park, along with a bike lane, water fountains and fitness circuits.

  • Running: Vale do Silêncio is regarded as one of the best places to run in Lisbon, recommended for a relaxed and safe route.
  • Sport and picnics: the big lawns suit games, stretching and lounging.
  • Climbing: an artificial structure built for outdoor climbing stands in the park.
  • Dogs: a designated dog park lets pets play and socialise safely.

Is it good for families and for a quiet break?

Yes. The name, "Valley of Silence", fits its character in the city: a green space away from tourist crowds. Families find lawns for play, and walkers find gentle paved paths.
