About this place
Parque da Paz is the largest urban park in the municipality of Almada, Portugal, lying across the Tagus from Lisbon. It covers roughly 50 hectares and combines a network of paths, a lake, marshes and broad areas of greenery in which woodland alternates with open clearings. It is a calm spot for walking, jogging or a family picnic, away from the bustle of the town centre.
How did Parque da Paz come about?
The idea of a park was accepted in 1975 during an urban planning process run by the municipality, which set aside about 60 hectares in the Quinta do Chegadinho area. The official decision to build it came in 1995 under mayor Maria Emília Neto de Sousa. Landscape architect Sidónio Pardal designed the project. The park has been built and extended since 1996, and today thousands of residents use it regularly every year.
What is there to see?
The lake is the focal point of the landscape and serves as a natural habitat for a range of wildlife. Marshes and wooded areas surround it. The path network suits a short stroll just as well as a longer bike ride or a running session. Benches and fountains line the routes, and here and there you can spot small animal enclosures.
The park is home to 114 species of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, including firs, pines, cork oaks, olive trees and cypresses, which give it a distinctly Mediterranean feel. Nature lovers should visit the Biodiversity Station (Estação da Biodiversidade), which presents information on 102 species of animals and plants that can be observed in the park.
Is it a good place for families?
Yes. There are children's play areas, seating, cafes and a kiosk, so you can spend a whole day here without leaving the grounds. The small animal enclosures add extra appeal for younger visitors.
What facilities does the park offer?
Visitors can use public restrooms, a kiosk, bicycle parking and an electric vehicle charging station. The wide network of paths makes the park convenient for cyclists, runners and walkers.

Why visit Parque da Paz?
This is the green heart of Almada, where nature, recreation and the story of municipal planning meet in one place. It works well as a stop for anyone exploring the Lisbon area who wants a break from the city's pace. The peaceful atmosphere, variety of plants and well-developed infrastructure mean you can spend anything from an hour to a whole afternoon here, depending on whether you choose a short walk or an active outing with a bike or a picnic on the grass. In the warmer months, bring water and a hat, as some paths cross open clearings where there is less shade than in the wooded parts of the park.
