About this place
Parque José Afonso (officially Largo José Afonso) is one of the best-known corners of Setúbal, a city park and square on Avenida Luísa Todi in the heart of town, close to the mouth of the Sado river. Greenery, walking paths and a long history make it a natural stop while exploring the city.
Where is Parque José Afonso?
The park is in Setúbal, Portugal, on Avenida Luísa Todi, one of the main avenues of the centre. It sits right next to the historic downtown, so most visitors can reach it on foot from the places where tourists usually stay. It is not a remote park on the outskirts but a public space that has served residents for strolls and gatherings for more than a century.
Where does the name come from?
The name of the place has changed along with its function. In the 19th century the area was known as Passeio do Lago, the "Lake Promenade". It was a square with a garden and a lake in the middle, surrounded by leafy trees lining pedestrian paths. The promenade was inaugurated in November 1870 under António Rodrigues Manito, then president of the city council.
In January 1911 it became known as Parque das Escolas, the "Schools Park", because two primary schools stood there: one for boys and one for girls. The current name, Largo José Afonso, was adopted in 1988 on the suggestion of councilwoman Paula Costa. It honours José Afonso, known as Zeca Afonso, one of the most important figures of Portuguese culture, who lived in Setúbal.
What to see
One of the most distinctive features is the orange portico, which draws the most attention and has become one of the city's landmark images. Outdoor events are held around it. The park also has a historic fountain from the old public promenade, often photographed by visitors.
The setting once had a closer link to the water. In the past the Sado reached this area, and a sandy beach with clean water lay nearby. Today the river is farther away, but that waterside past still explains the old name and the layout of the place.
Events and city life
Largo José Afonso hosts outdoor events. One example is the Festa do Mar, the festival of the sea, which returned to this square. Use of the space is governed by a separate regulation published by the Setúbal municipality, so if you plan a larger gathering, check the current rules on the council website.
