Telašćica

Telašćica Nature Park stretches along the southeastern tip of Dugi otok island, within the Općina Sali municipality on the Croatian coast. It's one of the most distinctive protected areas in northern Dalmatia, combining a sheltered bay, a salt lake, dramatic sea cliffs, and Mediterranean vegetation of olive groves and maquis.

What can you see in the park?

The heart of the park is Telašćica Bay, one of the largest and best-sheltered natural anchorages on the Adriatic, dotted with a dozen or so small islets and rocky outcrops in its inner waters. Right next to the bay lies Lake Mir, a saltwater lake linked to the sea through underground rock channels. Its water is warmer and saltier than the open sea, and the local mud has long been considered to have healing properties - many visitors come specifically to bathe here and relax.

On the opposite, southern side of the park, the terrain drops abruptly into the sea in cliffs rising more than 150 meters above the water. This is one of the most striking stretches of coastline in this part of the Adriatic - the cliffs are clearly visible from a boat, and sailing alongside them is often the highlight of a day trip.

How do you get to the park?

The most convenient way in is by boat - excursion boats leave regularly from Sali, the main settlement in the municipality and the natural base for exploring Dugi otok, heading straight for Telašćica Bay. Combined trips with the neighboring Kornati National Park, whose islands lie just across the channel, are especially popular. To reach Dugi otok itself, take a ferry from Zadar, then continue by car or boat directly to the park.

What else is there besides the lake and the cliffs?

The park's land is covered with old olive groves, some more than a century old, alongside typical Mediterranean maquis full of aromatic herbs and shrubs. A small donkey sanctuary also operates within the park, where the animals graze naturally and help preserve the island's traditional farming landscape. The surrounding waters are rich in marine life, making the area a popular spot for diving and snorkeling.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring and early autumn are ideal, offering mild temperatures and fewer crowds than the height of summer. In summer, the water in Lake Mir and the bay warms up the most, which is great for swimming, but the area can get busy with boat tours. Outside the summer peak, the park keeps its quiet, wild character, and the views of the cliffs and bay remain just as impressive.
