Osinalické bučiny

Zakšín, Czechia

About this place

Osinalické bučiny is a small nature reserve in the cadastral territory of Zakšín, in the Česká Lípa district, within the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. It covers 7.53 hectares and lies at the southern tip of the Zakšín cadastre, at an elevation of 250 to 340 metres, roughly one kilometre northeast of the village of Medonos. The reserve stretches across the southeastern slopes of Skaliska hill, which rises to 376 metres.

What does the reserve protect?

The landscape here is defined by mature beech forest growing directly on sandstone bedrock, a combination typical of the wider Kokořínsko region. Sandstone outcrops — blocks, low cliffs and small ravines carved into the rock — sit alongside the beech stands, creating a mosaic of habitats rather than a uniform forest. This pairing of old-growth beech woodland with exposed sandstone is what gives the site its ecological value and was the main reason it was placed under protection.

Why was it protected?

The reserve was legally established on 19 November 2002, specifically to safeguard well-preserved beech communities growing on sandstone substrate along with a number of legally protected plant species found there. The rock habitats, shaded by the beech canopy, create microclimatic niches — pockets of moisture and light on ledges and in crevices — that support plants with narrow ecological requirements not found in ordinary forest floor conditions. Protection covers both the tree stand itself and the associated rock-dwelling flora.

Who manages the site?

The reserve is administered by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (Agentura ochrany přírody a krajiny ČR), through its Regional Office for the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. This is the same authority responsible for managing and monitoring the other ecologically valuable sites across the broader protected landscape area.

Where exactly is it located?

Osinalické bučiny sits in the southern part of the Zakšín cadastral area, close to the village of Medonos, on the slopes of Skaliska hill. The surrounding Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj region is known for its sandstone rock formations, ravines and forests, and has long attracted hikers and nature photographers. Given its modest size, the reserve represents one of the smaller but characteristic fragments of this sandstone landscape.
