About this place
Špičák u Střezivojic is a small geological natural monument within the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area, on the eastern edge of the village of Střezivojice, part of the Dobřeň municipality in the Mělník District of Central Bohemia. The site sits roughly fifteen kilometers northeast of Mělník and six kilometers south of Dubá.
What does this natural monument protect?
Declared on 29 May 1979, the reserve covers a mere 0.5 hectares, established to protect a distinctive thirteen-meter sandstone rock needle known as Špičák. The rock is made of blocky sandstone saturated with iron compounds, and this iron saturation has carved unusual surface features into the stone: small hollows, rosette shapes, ledges, and other micro-forms created where iron incrustation hardened the rock unevenly against weathering. The whole formation measures sixteen meters in length, six meters in width, and up to thirteen meters in height.
What surrounds the rock?
The hill on which Špičák stands reaches an elevation of 390 meters above sea level. A mixed forest surrounds the rock, dominated by European beech and common hornbeam — a combination typical of many hills across the Kokořínsko region, forming a shaded stand of trees around the sandstone formation.
Can visitors reach it?
No marked trail leads directly to the rock itself, which makes this a destination more for those seeking the region's quieter corners than a stop on a standard hiking route. The nearest marked trails — a blue-marked and a yellow-marked route — pass roughly five hundred meters from the formation, so reaching the site requires a short walk off the designated path.
Why does this place matter?
Špičák u Střezivojic illustrates the geological variety hidden within the Kokořínsko region, an area best known for its larger sandstone rock cities and gorges. Here, on a miniature scale, visitors can observe the same processes that shaped the region's bigger, more famous formations: the interplay of water, weathering, and iron incrustation acting on soft sandstone. Its small protected footprint makes it one of the more discreet natural monuments in the area, appreciated mainly by geology enthusiasts and travelers exploring the region's back roads and side paths rather than by casual sightseers.
