Mokřady dolní Liběchovky

Tupadly, Czechia

About this place

Mokřady dolní Liběchovky is a 36.5-hectare nature reserve established in 2001 along the Liběchovka stream, spanning the cadastral territories of Brocno, Tupadly, and Želízy in the Ústí nad Labem and Central Bohemian regions, within the Litoměřice and Mělník districts. Sitting right at the border of two regions, it protects one of the more distinctive river valley ecosystems in this part of the Czech Republic.

Where exactly is the reserve located?

The protected area stretches on both sides of the village of Tupadly, which splits it into two separate sections. The first, roughly two kilometers long, runs north of the village, further up the valley. The second, almost as long, extends between Tupadly and the village of Želízy, reaching the boundary of the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj protected landscape area. The approximate coordinates of the reserve's core are 50.4335 N, 14.4746 E.

What can visitors find in the Liběchovka valley?

The Liběchovka stream valley is a mosaic of water-dependent habitats. Along the streambed, alder floodplain forests give way to sedge marshes, reed beds, and wet meadows. This variety of habitats supports numerous protected plant and animal species. Mollusks — snails in particular — and spiders stand out as the most significant groups here, their presence a good indicator of the healthy condition of these wetland ecosystems. It was precisely this richness of invertebrate life, alongside the characteristic floodplain vegetation, that justified placing the area under protection.

Is there a hiking trail through the reserve?

Yes. Starting from the direction of Želízy, a roughly 300-meter nature trail leads directly into the alluvial forest and wetlands. The trail was laid out in the same year the reserve was declared, 2001, and includes seven themed stops introducing visitors to the valley's plants and animals. It's worth noting, though, that the trail is not passable during periods of high water — the very wetland character that gives the area its ecological value can also limit access for visitors.

Who is this destination for?

Mokřady dolní Liběchovky appeals mainly to nature lovers, birdwatchers and botany enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a quiet walk away from crowds. The reserve has no elaborate tourist infrastructure — its appeal lies in the raw, natural character of the valley and the chance to observe a near-intact floodplain ecosystem. It makes a good complement to a visit to the nearby Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj protected landscape area, known for its sandstone rock formations and ravines.
