About this place
Stráně Truskavenského dolu is a small but ecologically valuable nature monument located in the municipality of Kokořín, in the Mělník district of the Central Bohemian Region, Czech Republic. The protected area sits near the village of Truskavna, on the northern slope of the Truskavenský dol valley, and forms part of the wider Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area, which also manages the site.
Why was this site protected?
The nature monument was declared in 2001 to preserve a rare xerothermal habitat found on the edges of sandstone outcrops. These sun-exposed, dry and rocky slopes create conditions that support plant and animal communities increasingly hard to find elsewhere in the region, making the reserve an important refuge for thermophilous (heat-loving) biodiversity.
What grows and lives here?
The sandstone slopes are covered with warm, dry grasslands hosting several rare and endangered plant species. Among the most notable are pasque flower, bearded iris and feather grass, all typical of sun-baked, calcium-poor sandy soils. The reserve is also home to a critically endangered species of lady's mantle, whose populations have been steadily declining across the Czech Republic.
Invertebrate life adds another layer of significance: the site harbors relict harvestmen species, described locally as the black and the brown harvestman, adapted to the cooler microhabitats found among rock crevices and vegetation. Their presence indicates a long-term ecological stability rarely found in disturbed landscapes.
Landscape and geology
The area's defining feature is its sandstone geology, characteristic of the broader Kokořínsko region, famous for its scenic rock labyrinths, gorges and sandstone "rock towns." The exposed rock edges create naturally sun-warmed ledges where xerothermal grasslands can develop — a habitat type that is nationally rare because it depends on a specific combination of bedrock, sun exposure and microclimate.
How to visit
Cycling route 0010 runs through or near the reserve, alongside a blue-marked hiking trail connecting the village of Kokořín with the Zimořský důl crossroads. This makes the site reasonably accessible to both hikers and cyclists exploring the Kokořínsko area, best known for Kokořín Castle and its network of trails through sandstone rock formations.
As with any nature monument, visitors should stay on marked trails, avoid picking plants and refrain from disturbing wildlife, since the fragile xerothermal grasslands can be easily degraded by trampling or off-trail activity.
