Na oboře

Chodeč, Czechia

About this place

Na oboře is a small but ecologically valuable nature monument located about one kilometer north of the village of Chodeč, part of the Vysoká municipality in the Mělník district of the Czech Republic. The site belongs to the network of small-scale, specially protected areas within the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area, which is responsible for its ongoing management.

What exactly does this protected area cover?

Na oboře consists of four separate, south-facing slopes covered in grassland and scrub, together spanning 3.46 hectares at elevations between 250 and 306 meters above sea level. The purpose of the protection is to preserve well-preserved slopes hosting Bromion erecti plant communities — dry, sun-exposed grasslands typical of warm, calcareous terrain in Central Europe.

What species live here?

The area serves as a refuge for several specially protected plant and animal species. Among the plants, the crested gentian (Gentiana cruciata) and the Bologna bellflower (Campanula bononiensis) are notable, both characteristic of xerothermic (heat- and drought-loving) grasslands. Among the fauna, the smooth snake (užovka hladká) is present, a species that favors sun-exposed, dry habitats with rich herbaceous vegetation.

Since when has the area been protected?

The site was declared a nature monument on 14 February 2001, with the protection taking legal effect on 19 March 2001. Since then, Na oboře has been formally managed as part of the small-scale protected-area network within Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj.

Why is it worth a visit?

Na oboře is of particular interest to nature lovers and botanists: its rare xerothermic grasslands, together with the specialized flora and fauna they support, offer something not found in the region's typical cultivated agricultural landscapes. The south-facing orientation of the slopes creates a microclimate favorable to heat-loving species that are otherwise uncommon in the cooler parts of the Czech Republic.
